Fogging Disinfection After Clearance: The Final Safety Step

Fogging Disinfection After Clearance: The Final Safety Step

Eliminating the invisible microbial load to guarantee a return to healthy living

When the last bag of waste leaves a stage-4 Diogenes home, the work of the ASBL Cœur Historique is far from over. Even if surfaces look visually clean, the walls, ceilings, and every last crack remain saturated with billions of pathogenic micro-organisms. Our fogging disinfection protocol sterilises both the air and the structure itself, delivering a 100% safe environment.

Persistent odours and embedded germs

The main problem after a full clear-out is the persistence of the characteristic “Diogenes smell” — a blend of decay, mould, and ammonia. This stubborn olfactory signature indicates that organic molecules and bacteria have worked their way deep into the plaster, floorboards, and masonry joints. A simple scrub with a brush or bleach is not enough to reach these microscopic areas, leaving behind an invisible but very real health risk for future occupants.

Porous materials and microbiological stagnation

The cause of this deep saturation lies in the very nature of the traditional building materials used in the Liège region. Plaster, wood, and concrete are porous and act like sponges, absorbing the biological fluids and toxic vapours released over years of neglect. Fungal spores, particularly resistant, take advantage of this porosity to lie dormant, ready to proliferate again as soon as humidity or temperature conditions become favourable.

The risks of reinfection and an uninhabitable space

The consequences of skipping this advanced disinfection step are serious. Prolonged inhalation of these residual odour particles and germs causes chronic headaches, nausea, and severe ENT infections in people who move back into the space. From a property standpoint, the home remains technically unsanitary and unfit for rental or occupation, which blocks the beneficiary’s social reintegration plans or creates major additional renovation costs for landlords.

Cold fogging with virucidal disinfectants

The technological solution deployed by our volunteer teams consists of automatic fogging disinfection. After cleaning the floors, we set up a fogging device in the centre of the sealed home. This machine turns a medical-grade liquid disinfectant (virucidal, bactericidal, and fungicidal, compliant with European standards) into a mist of ultra-fine micro-droplets. This mist spreads everywhere, saturates the air, penetrates the smallest pores in the walls, and instantly destroys odours and bacteria at the source within a few hours of exposure.
