1. Why a social taxi service?
In the Liège province, as in many rural areas, the lack of a personal vehicle or sufficiently frequent public transport turns a simple medical appointment or administrative step into a hard-to-overcome obstacle. For elderly, isolated or precarious people, this mobility difficulty often worsens an isolation that is already present.
SOS Social Taxi is not a regular taxi service. It is specifically for people who, without our help, would simply give up an essential appointment — medical, administrative or social — for lack of accessible transport.
Rural isolation: in villages and outlying areas of the province, the lack of a nearby bus line turns every outing into a logistical challenge.
Urban isolation: in the city too, reduced mobility or financial hardship can make a simple journey inaccessible.
2. The journeys we cover
Our priority is essential journeys: medical and paramedical appointments, steps with the CPAS (social welfare office), the Justice of the Peace or other administrations, as well as essential food shopping when no other solution is available.
Every journey is funded by donations received by the non-profit, notably to cover the fuel of our solidarity vehicle — which is why the service remains prioritised for the most urgent or isolated situations.
3. Our approach in Liège
Our volunteer drivers do more than just drive: they take the time to accompany the person, wait if necessary during the appointment, and create a warm moment of conversation during the journey — often the only social contact of the day for some beneficiaries.
